Beta 2.1.12 Released

What's New

    • You used to be able to glitch the editor into letting you put a lowered ramp tile with nothing on it. This made no sense.
    • The level select screen is meant to show you which secrets you've found, but it didn't work properly. Should be OK now.

    i love everything !!! the blue and red rings (and the switcher), the retractable black blocks , and i've been impressed by the red auto-shift in the 99 which is able to dodge my bullets !!!

      the 87 is quite hard . the timing is important : you have to find the good sequence , let the blue shift pass the ramp, the it goes down, then it goes up back, and it goes left, and then you will go...

  7. it's a screenshot of the level 99 ! it's an amazing enemy: he's able to follow you, as the eye, and he is able to avoid the bullets, mines, etc...it's crazy!!!
    but it's not in the editor :(

  9. For a moment I thought I had found a problem with dud bullets, since in sebsheperds latest "method Amilsi" (not bad btw) sometimes one of the bullet disappears right after I fire it. But then a little further in I saw why: There are a whole bunch of guns which keep getting triggered by some arrow blocks and I probably just happened to shoot when the bullet limit was reached. So I guess this is just false alarm.

    Why did I post this anyway then? Because it's something to consider when creating new levels, which one might not immediately think of. If there's a lot of pewpew going on somewhere on the map, providing the player with a limited number of bullets can make the game frustrating because they never know if a bullet goes dud - or even why.

      yes the fast way is solvable. it's inspired by the zxin's World. So i can't give any hint... ;D #iAmADevil 3;)

      Anyway, this way is less interesting! it could have been usefull if needed to see all the replays and fix a hole, for example.

      Just as in my "Shortcut to the replays"... there is a secret way to win in a few seconds !!! but i didn't need it, either.

  11. Hello, I have been a long time fan of Blackshift and I have steadily followed Blackshift as it's evolved throughout the years, and this is the best I've ever seen it. I've usually been silent, but I want to say thanks for such an amazing game that has caused so many hours of my time to evaporate over the last decade(?) or so.

    Also, gosh some of those secrets in the levels are hard. I've done well finding warp elevators but level 63's secret is killing me. I can't seem to blow up the plus sign mines in that narrow corridor without using the bomb block, and of course that's the only way I can think of in the level to destroy the obelisk to finish...seriously genius stuff in here! Also I have like four of the secret shiny things but I haven't unlocked anything yet...is that normal? xD

    1. Hi! I'm really glad you're enjoying it. I'm afraid there are still a couple of bugs stopping you getting some of the secrets, and you've found one on 63. It's bad of me to leave impossible stuff in the game; my only excuse is that we're still in beta. It will be fixed in the next update!

    3. Oh okay, thanks for responding! I tried everything on 63, haha. I tried going through the obstacle course twice, once to grab the secret and the other to go in the warp but it didn't register either.

      I tried a lot on 85 too as I saw in the corner with the remote red lamp some teleports, and I thought if it was like 86 I could move the lamp far away and remotely find a hidden one offscreen or something...

      Oh that makes sense then. Yeah I'm still missing a lot of things in the editor like the blue lamps, conveyor belt switcher, ice teleports, infinite bullet item, orange evil duplicate of me, orange gate(I'm having a lot of fun giving objects random names)...I got all the question marks now though!

    yes you're right, the secret in 63 is not winnable yet, because you need another bomb to win the level . But don't worry Rob does know that and he will fix it before to go Beta out!

    also, the 85's secret is not winnable (you can find it but not get it...)

    14 41 60 70 71 80 98 are ok.

    3. Wow just like the older version of Blackshift! I'm gonna keep looking for it. I found something cool from Netshift too! I had no idea right clicking had functionality in the editor. By orange gate I mean the enemy gate that depletes when you kill all enemies. Found that by right clicking too! I can't think of anything missing from this game except that item that when you shoot it, it spawned a lot of green walls around it, and the fake walls you could go through. Yet there are so many cool new items too like the red lamp and the proximity walls I've fallen in love with. I tried some of the level pit levels but y'all are too smart, I can't figure them out. I'll probably make a few simple levels to start!

    4. you're right, there are a lot of too hard levels (my weakness: i don't often find the balance "hard/tractable". i'm trying to find this balance, but i know i do not always succeed!
      it could be repulsive for new players...

      so, i agree with you : build some simple levels to start ! (well, you know, an Evil Extrem Hard Impossible Level will be welcomed !!! ;D )

    5. Yeah, I too struggle with this problem.
      As for old blackshift items, I could think of a few, but we got a lot of other stuff that's even cooler.
      The color change from Lvl100 was quite neat, complete with colored traps, bullets, walls...
      I wish I had more time on my hands XD

    8. Yeah, to be fair, it is getting less common. But I’m sure I saw a bit recently where you have to pick up items while sliding.

      Partly my fault, of course, for not fixing the bug.

    10. TBH, the problem isn’t really that it’s possible (although it was never meant to be) — it’s that you need frame-perfect timing to do it. I should either make it impossible or easier.

    12. I found another bug while playing with the redshift/lamp, if you switch to it while your character is moving with the key held down, the switch happens but your original character keeps moving.

      Also I didn't mean to cause a reflection on overall level difficulty, I just mean that I couldn't solve almost any of the user levels, haha. I did pretty well with the built in level pack since they introduced concepts one by one and they had the ability to build on each other through a series. (My favorite level was the one with the brown block maze you explore! Item management is what I like the most, and the best moment I felt in the campaign was getting enough mirrors to use the yellow gun there!)

  15. I made my first level! It's called Buddy Training. I said I wanted to make simple levels but the idea kept growing as I designed it, Lol. My profile name is Alis on Blackshift and now I need to change my journal profile because I named myself wrong, haha.

    Either way the level should be complex enough to experiment a little in, I tried to keep the number of different objects lower so it's easier to digest. Enjoy!

  16. Hey!
    I haven't played since "I-Dunno-How-Much-Time" and reinstalled the game yesterday (I had to delete all the files otherwise the game was just crashing). Just wanted to say that I'm really impressed by the progress made. The music is great and really suit the atmosphere. I've noticed a small bug though: The play button on the main menu doesn't redirect you automatically to the last level you haven't completed anymore. Other than that, everything is awesome.

    1. Another small bug: If you clone yourself the music stop.
      Probably because the game thinks you're dead but the level haven't restarted.

      That said, I'm wondering if it would be better if the music was not restarting with the level but continue in a loop until you beat or quit the level?

      That's really a game design choice, but I think it might get annoying to ear the first 3 seconds of the same tune over and over if you don't stop dying in a tough level.

    2. Hey, it's good to see you! Thanks for the bug reports. I'll get those fixed.

      About the music, yeah, I spent some time thinking about this. An advantage of doing it this way is that it discourages charging ahead and dying, because if you stay alive you get to hear the whole track. But, as you said, on action levels deaths are common so it can get annoying too.

      In the end I looked at what some other games did and retstarting the music seems way more common, so I did that. I'll try implementing it the other way at some point if I get time, and see which feels better.

    3. Yeah, both way have advantages and disadvantages... It's really your choice in the end. It's true that blackshift is not an hotline miami clone, so most of the time you're suppose to take your time and think instead of dying on repetition... Writing this made me think to something else: will you let peoples choose which music will play during their level?

    5. Not sure if this is a bug or not, but I've noticed a weird behavior for the new blue robots enemies. I've done a small video:

    6. Well spotted. Yup, it's a bug. The blue robots are actually very buggy, which is why they aren't available in the editor — I designed the levels so you can't get into many situations where their bugginess shows, but you found one!

  17. I said I would make simple levels and I can't even do that. Follow The Numbers is a massive multipart level with a hub section you keep returning to, and you go and visit different puzzles to unlock another part of the level. Item management is a key theme as you only have so many chances to duplicate extra items. It looks like a cluttered mess(and kind of is), but just follow the level title's instructions and it'll be fine! -Alis

  21. I think I went a little too wild with lasers, resulted in crash reports. Reduced it to a more reasonable amount of red beams, now it works like I wanted it to. Probably it is even better that way, otherwise I would have put in too much I guess XD

  23. The slide-teleports are neat, now I can actually do what my last box-slide-puzzle should have been.
    The difficulty got a little out of hand though, so I didn't put in the single sticky blocks like I originally intended to.
    You can either go with the map or you can try to figure out a solution on your own (I put in one extra box of each kind that you don't need, this could make the slide-puzzle a bit easier).

    2. I locked the bots up because you could mess with the slide puzzle when timing the bot move right. But that made checking the current position quite uncomfortable, so I'm gonna use another approach allowing you to scout the puzzle field. Unfortunately this will mess with your scores again. Sorry!

    1. Oh gosh I am compelled to somehow solve this level! I got through the one way gun puzzle and the duplication puzzle, but wow trying to get the switches in the third section to sync properly to fire both bullets is maddening. You are evil and your levels are amazing! -Alis

  25. I'm still experiencing some troubles when editing published levels. Like:
    -Version A is published
    -I make some changes and publish them (version B)
    -Try to beat the changed level, but it is still version A
    -Edit again, but in the editor it already opens as version B
    -I make some slight visual changes just to see if the changes get saved (version C) and publish again
    -I try playing it, now Version B got published
    -I go to the editor again and am back to version A (I guess? Could have been B)

    I even tried clearing my local cache inbetween, still the published version rarely matches up with the last edited version. Usually I get the version I wanted online eventually, but until I get there it's just confusing. And I fill the plays/wins counter with my own plays throughout the changes.

  27. My attempt at a super hard one! Color Swap Time!

    I've always liked the red and blue mirrors in Blackshift and I wanted a level revolving mostly around creating proper chains with them, combined with a little bit of thought into timing. Kind of wish where were blue bumpers and blue portable mirrors, but I'm really happy with how this one turned out!

I think I accidendally left a couple sequence breaking elements in there but I'll leave them in since outsmarting the level creator is always enjoyable. Like in Prepare Carefully you figured out how to bring a tenth item which I completely overlooked! I like to put the videos on in the mornings and just watch people figure out all the cool tricks. -Alis

    "World Of Secret Ways" is not as i would have liked it. but i think it's good, though !!! i would have prefered that secret ways are independant , but i could not. so you will have to find them all in the right order.

    I might be wrong, but i think this level is (again) devilish hard !!!

    3. Wow, some dexterity required to set that up! I think I'll leave it in since it's a much more entertaining way to solve the level than what I thought up! I think it's pretty clever and reminds me of the Metroid games where you could skip entire sections of the game if you do the right movements!

      I'll just need to be more devious next time, I have a level halfway done with crates and conveyor belt switching, I found some fun interactions between them. I think the conveyor belt toggle box thing is my favorite object!

  32. Okay new level, yay! Box Launcher!

    I noticed that when the gravity crates are on ice, they follow the ice rather than the normal direction they usually go. I combined that property with the conveyor belt toggle for a few interesting contraptions!

    Also I'm pretty sure I toned down the shortcuts (By toned down, I mean I remembered to check for alternate paths for once), so for once I might have a good clear time on my own level! I'm starting to get why so many people are into speedrunning...watching Mills and Burri beat my times on every one of my levels makes me want to join in too!

      i played my run fastly to be able to watch your replay, but my run is approximately the same than yours. Except around the green lamp, where i have taken a shortcut, unintentionnaly. And another one at the end... (i've just found it!)

Ya I caught one of your older runs before you inevitably beat my time again lol, and the green bomb there was a last ditch effort to have the floor blow up a brown wall when you trigger the explosion, as I think only portable bombs and explodable crates would work that way. I'll leave it in since it only effects that one small part, not the main puzzle anyway.

      And wow thank you for the compliment too! I usually start by playing with a concept in the editor for a while, seeing how items interact like that big crate puzzle. I build one section at a time and am nice with checkpoints. Then I clean it up and make the maze look pretty!

      I saw a lot of the comments about Obie and he sounded really skilled and clever, I vagely remembered the name on Netshift but I only lurked there. I played (keyword: played, not won) a few levels of his and they're really good! Hopefully he's got peace :(

    it has been great to built it, but i don't know if it will be great to play it...
    Our late Brother Obie would have not liked this level, because he didn't like hidden stuff... And this level is based on an invisible hand !!! you will have to understand and figue out what the invisible hand is doing...

    i don't know if you will like it but i have to say it was a pleasure to build it ;D ;D ;D

      I made another super hard level, Shoved into the Fire. I made an interesting contraption that does what the title says. Unlike most of my levels the difficulty comes from trying not to die, though there are a few clever puzzles too!

    1. Rob i know you don't like the levels based on a bug.
      When an item is copied on a conveyor belt, it is possible to get it if you move in a perfect frame... So, in this level, if you can watch my replay, i build it to be able to get the items without a perfect frame needed. ;D

    5. oh, i think it is not so tricky. as i said to rob, there are two ways to solve the 2nd part:

      1: get the perfect frame to pick up an item copied on the conveyor belt. this is a quite tricky move !

      2: you also can find a way which don't need this perfect frame. Hint: Using a woodblock make your moves very easier ! :D

      And to stop the firing cannon you only have to kill the blue ship ! :D

  37. My tenth level, Naughty Crate Jail is made! It's likely my last one for a few weeks, but it took me hours to finish! Almost no item management, all of it is moving boxes around!

    There are many paths you can take too, so it could take a bit to find the fastest route!

      Ich nicht, deshalb habe ich noch zwei Tiles eingefügt um die Zeit etwas zu verlängern.

      oh yeah sorry, i have a lot of work lately... and i have bought a new house, in a new town, that means move, school inscriptions for my kids, etc... etc...
      But i'm still here, and i check the game everyday !!! (i just can't make myself stop !!! XD XD XD )
      But don't worry, i will re-build some new levels soon.

      I don't have enough time to build, but i would be really happy to play, if you or anyone else build one new level :D
